Sleeping in an Igloo at Treble Cone Summit

So a few weeks ago I was hiking the summit of Treble Cone with some work mates and stumped upon an incredibly well located igloo which had been build by someone with a good head for heights. It was perched on a very very small area of rock sticking out over the back cliffs of the summit. Ever since I saw it I wanted to go sleep in it so we did. Took a little bit of organising to get up their after work as I had spent a full day teaching on too. Massive thanks to all that helped out, really appreciated!

Some potentially epic lines to be had still if your willing to hike!

The best view of sunset in the area for sure

Anyone want to take me Helisking? please….

After we cooked up an almighty batch of cheesy pasta went and braved the cold for a few star shots.

Stunt ditch and few random bits from around Morzine

Been a couple weeks since last post but not much has been going on here. The weather has been pretty rubbish and not had a sunny day for what seams like ages, really hard to motivate yourself to go ride when the visibility is this rubbish. There has been a good dump of snow but only up the very top in Avoriaz and even then its really heavy snow. Here are few random shots from the last few weeks.

Waterfall in Nyon, much bigger one behind where I took the photo from but not as good.

Had one last stunt ditch training session and this was also the last time we saw sun.

Jen ripping it

Young Max showing us all up

Definitely one to watch in the future, Isla.

Cheers for photo Max.

Had another banked slalom race up in Avoriaz and it was sick! Crap weather and couldn’t see but such a mellow event. No one could actually be bothered to race and the free BBQ, wine and punch at the bottom proved to far more appealing for all the riders! At 2pm we eventually thought some racing should get done. I had finished 2nd at the last banked slalom but the standard for this one was very high as it was the final round of a tour so lots of riders from other resorts had come over for it. Eventually ended up 12th which I was stoked about and even managed to beat Jimbo however, Myles beating me by 0.01 of a second was frustrating as hell, dam him!! Next time haha! Really fun day though and a massive thanks to all the organisers. Most fun event of the season. Few photos bellow and more can be found here.

Loads of swallow tails showed up for the event!

Soph in the pump track in Cham.

Em, Mark, Dee and Keeks were over in Chatel again so managed to catch up with them and went over to Cham for day. They headed off skiing but I meet up with a mate and went biking again. Really wish I’d kept a bike in Edinburgh as I have missed it heaps. Also had best  french onion soup ever!

Myles planning his new business venture and Evians demise.

Had a rather hungover walk today up to Lake Montriond and to the waterfalls up there with Myles and Marlies. Was pretty chilly still and the weather was still pretty grim but at least it got us out the flat.

Pretty boring and uneventful blog post I know but not much has been going on really. Only got a couple more weeks left here and then onwards to Edinburgh and then a month in Vietnam!

French National SBX Champs in Grand Bornand and Spring in Morzine

Yesterday was the last big race of the season, the French National Champs in Grand Bornand. It’s a fairly local race for us but still meant a 5am start. Once again the venue was a much smaller mountain which not many of us had heard of before so good to get to see something new. It’s been so hot and slushy in the afternoons here we were surprised at how they had managed to get enough snow together to build such a fun looking course.

Grand Bornand lower slopes

The home run on the lower slopes starting to look a little bare…

Course run through

  • Wu-tang
  • 3 big long rollers
  • Step down road gap thing

  • Step up in to ‘half a tea cup’ 180 degree right turn kinda thing
  • Step down

Hiding from the Sun

Straw hats and umbrellas to hide from the sun were the order of the day for the marshals.

After inspection we lined up for our first training run which was pretty much a 50% run just to check out the course and see how it was running. All was good and such a fun track to ride!! Had a rest up before next training run however after a few delays from crashes we were told that there was no more training runs and it was straight into qualifying. Sucked loads but 1 training run was all most of us managed to get in.

Maisie hitting up the Wu-Tang

I was really annoyed with my qualification run and got to the bottom knowing I had made lots of little errors and knowing that I definitely hadn’t gone fast enough although when the times came in I was 33rd and only 1 place off qualifying and missed out by 0.06 of a second!! Gutted. Still a good result though for a pretty big race.

The other guys all did pretty good with Max and Kyle both managing to get through their first heats and ending up top in the top 16. Myles McKnuckle did not live up to his new nickname and went massive off one of the jumps landing on his back pretty hard in his qualification run. Sounds like crash of the season but hopefully he’ll be back on his board in no time.

The ‘Tea Cup’, possibly the most fun feature we’d hit all season!

Bankes about to take out the dude in yellow.

Max not so lucky in his 2nd heat. The jump into the ‘Tea Cup’

It was all done by 2pm and time to pack up the vans and head back to Morzine. For full list of results check the FIS website however they are not up just yet. No more proper races for the last few weeks of the season. It’s all gone so so fast but its been good laugh for sure.

Before the race I had a few days off work so could get some general riding in! Managed to make it over to Chatel and Morgins properly for the first time this season and I think it could possible be the last time as well as the snow is disappearing fast! There was some sections of proper ‘agricultural’ riding. Not gone out for general kind of mellow day just touring about like you do when your just in the alps for a week so made a nice change.

Myles and Soph in Morgains

Couple more days and don’t think this lift will be running. Felt about 20C at the bottom!

Also managed to go to Cascade de l’Arpenaz which is a massive waterfall near Sallanches. I’ve seen it loads from the motor way and always wanted to go right up to it so we did. It doesn’t look big from this photo but its so high that all the water just get caught by the wind and blown to the side. We were literally directly under it and if the wind had stopped would have got soaked. The photo doesn’t do the waterfall any justice but it is massive! The photo is a stitch of 4 wee photos as my s90′s 28mm lens was nowhere near even close to fitting it all in. Will definitely go back though with my proper camera before the season ends.

Definitely feels like the season is coming to and end though. Shorts and jandels are out in town and as its so slushy up the hill in the afternoons theres been plenty of slack lining been done.

Myles the occasional slack line ninja!

Feel ready for the end of the season though now and looking forward to getting out of Morzine. Went over to Cham again the other day and managed to get a wee bit of biking in which was really really good fun. Did my first bit of ‘downhill’ in over 5 years and I can’t wait to get new bike sorted out when I get back to New Zealand, just wish I had one here! Still a month left and only 20 days until Avoriaz closes. Last few weeks could get pretty dull around here as people are slowly starting to leave. Should be able to get a few hikes and other trips in before I leave. Still haven’t been to Annecy yet so that could be the next trip.

Halfpipe Training in Avoriaz

Went for another hike yesterday in the baking sun. The aim was to get up to the very top of Pepsi Max in Avoriaz but none of the guys were keen to do the Gnarly ridge route as there isn’t much snow on it at the moment at what stuff is still left is falling off rather quick. So we ended up trying to just hike the bowl. Without snowshoes or splitboard it was a nightmare but we made it at least half way and the snow was actually still alright.

Resting after a monster hike

Ed, Elliot and Linzi rest after monster hike.

The rest of the team got back day ago and we were straight back into halfpipe training which is definitely my favorite type of training. Took a few photos before it got to slush and closed so have a gander. Think the biggest improvement in my riding all season has definitely been pipe, its so so addictive! Cheers Myles for the shots of myself.

Trip to Chamonix, Banked Slalom and Best Pow Quest EVER!

It’s been a pretty mellow few weeks here in Morzine. The rest of the team have been off racing which I didn’t do due to lack of funds and because I did the Polish and Czech races instead. The flat has been nice and quiet without them so good to get some down time.

I managed to finally make it over to Chamonix for couple of days which was epic! Stayed in a land boat, rode a couple of different mountains, did a small hike, went for cycle, partied and met some really cool people. Possibly some of the best days of the season so far! The snow wasn’t fantastic there but loads of stuff to jib and jump off.

One of the only shots I took in Cham. That slightly lower peak on the left is called Le Dru and you can just make out a slightly lighter patch of rock on it after half of it fell off.

After coming back and doing a couple days transfer driving I managed to get a morning off to do one of the Changabang banked slalom races up in Avoriaz and managed to get 2nd place and nice new belt. Really fun events to do and I’d love to get a few more running at Treble Cone this season as anyone can do them. One girl at this one had been snowboarding for only 4 Days!! Few photos from the race can be seen here.

After I got back to Morzine it started snowing again which at first I was kind of annoyed about as I had been enjoying all the sun but after the pow runs we had today I have changed my mind. Went up with few of the Aussies, Elliot and Sam and did a few small hike/traverses around the back side of pepsi max which we were all super stoked on already, so much fun and loads of fresh powpow and trees. We did this lap a couple times and were almost ready to call it a day.

Elliot stoked on life…… continuously

The Alp we hiked later in the day.

Jamie

Later on after what we though was going to be one of our last runs we got to the top of Chaux Fleurie chair and saw thee most amazing looking face that needed to be shredded. I met a couple of lasses I knew who said some of our other mates had just set off to do the same face. It looked like a mammoth hike but it needed to be done!

The Hike

Work mate Trevor who beasted past us on the hike.

Looking back into Chatel on the right and Avoriaz on the left.

Well earned rest at the top.

It only took us about 1 hour to get to the summit where we changed our minds about what route we were going to take down as opted for the steeper and deeper option which hadn’t been baked in the sun all day which is always a safer bet! We were treated with possibly thee best run of our lives. I know everyone always says that but genuinely it was epic.

Sam ripping

Knackered on the chairlift home.

Apologies for the lame photos in this post, just been using my s90 and there is something up with the censor and keep getting light patches in my shots. Need to get it sent back to canon.
